Before reading Men of War I was familiar with the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, but Dr. Forstchen book greatly broadened my knowledge of the significant role played by Black soldiers in the attack. He showed how they did not just charge into a hole and get slaughtered, as seems to be the case in other sources I have read. I truly wish to thank Dr. Forstchen for writing this book.
