War As I Knew It is a memoir of American General George S. Patton's experiences in World War II between 1942 (the American landings in North Africa) and 1945 (the end of World War II). Using a candid and rapid writing style, the reader gets caught up in his descriptions, observations, analyses, and reflections on the various battles he fought and the personalities he worked with. Patton's competition with British General Bernard Montgomery and keeping American tanks and troops supplied as they advanced across France and Germany are two major themes in this book. Here are some of the take-away leadership lessons for me from this book: a pint of sweat will save a gallon of blood; do not show doubt, discouragement, fear, or fatigue in front of subordinates; as long as you attack your enemy he cannot find the time to attack you; demand the impossible; dare the extreme occasion; do not take counsel of your fears; the only sure defense is offense; the efficiency of the offense depends on the warlike souls of those conducting it; make sure soldiers have clean socks so as to prevent trench foot; use the means at hand to inflict the maximum amount of wounds, death, and destruction on the enemy in the minimum time. In sum, this is an excellent war memoir with numerous valuable leadership lessons.

War as he knew it
War is dreadful but listen from those who experienced it the way Patton did is really a sobering experience and makes you love peace even more!

A military enthusiasts must-read
Verily , verily, I say unto thee: Whatsoever thou gleanest not from the horse`s mouth, thou shalt glean from a cow`s backside. The General`s own words therefore, bear the truth!! Buy the book and see for thyselves!

not for everyone
This was compiled from notes Patton made for himself. Provides a look into his thought processes, observations, and conclusions. Will be invaluable for one wanting to study tactics and/or leadership. Will be a disappointment for those wanting the cheap thrill of a shallow "and there I wuz" war story. No serious collection of WWII literature is complete w/o it.
