Tim Maia already had a strong passion for American rhythm & blues and rock & roll before he embarked for the U.S. in 1959. While his teenage chum Roberto Carlos was covering the King's hits and garnering accolades as "the Brazilian Elvis," Maia was incubating an idea; if Carlos was the Brazilian Elvis, he could be the Brazilian Little Richard. Young Maia's five years in the States, which coincided with the birth and early rise of Motown, were instrumental to the development of the artist he would later become. By the time Maia finally got into a recording studio, his taste for crisp horn sections and powerful arrangements overwhelmed Brazilian engineers. Released in 2001, this compilation brings together 14 English-language songs recorded by Maia between 1970 and 1976. Taken as a whole, These Are the Songs might come off as an homage to Motown and Stax, but even when Maia works in styles that are quintessentially American (like R&B, blues, and gospel), the songs collected here remain markedly Brazilian -- from the overtly bossa nova arrangements of "New Love" and "Over Again" to the lighter touches of bossa-soul on the title track and the upbeat "I Don't Know What to Do with Myself." Similarly, Maia's English-language lyrics carry an earnest simplicity, adding a tone of innocence to each track. ~ Matt Rinaldi, Rovi
