Book's Context: This book provides a solution to the construction problem for a model that is so small that it can't be constructed in the same way as the real thing, yet must not be fragile and still look like the real boat. Book's content: The book starts with a very simple to understand procedure for achieving the correctly shaped carving of the hollowed out hull. It is so thin you can almost see thru it. He then demonstrates how to cover it with thick paper to represent the planking, afterwhich, it is completely fitted out to resemble a workboat ready for fishing. He then solves the problem of where do I get plans to build such models of the real thing in seven chapters providing all an experienced builder would need to build the real thing. He uses British boats, but you could easily substitute plans published in the US by Howard Chapelle or John Gardiner. Recommendation: I always recommend that beginning modelers start with what in real life is a small open wooden boat, but built at a large enough scale so all the detail is possible, and that you have to solve all the same problems experienced by a real shipwright. When you've done this and need to build a model that is much smaller, this book demonstrates a proven construction technique for such a project, and it provides the plans required for the practice. I recommend this book for beginners and advanced modelers because both can profit from presentation in this book.
