This is the earliest autobiography of an avowed American homosexual, published in St. Louis in 1901. In rural Missouri, then in St. Louis, Hartland lived with his conscience (of his time), yet as a talented and perceptive writer he describes such things as street-cruising and the style of individual pickups that seem very familiar to us over 100 years later.

This is a remarkable autobiographical work by an American gay man who was born in 1871 and details his life - including his gay liaisons - during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Fascinating insight into how gay men lived and loved during a much less enlightened and less tolerant era. The only drawback: it ends in his early 30s: one is left wondering what happened to him? How much longer did he live? One longs for more details. Commendable bio!
