Fr. Lagrange, taking into account new knowledge acquired from historical, linguistic, archelogical, and other resources, brought a whole new light to the study of the Bible, and struggled to have the historical/critical interpretation accepted by the Catholic Church. However, this being the era of the Modernist crisis, he was criticized and harassed by conservative elements in the church. Steadfastly loyal to the faith and the church, Fr. Lagrange pursued his studies very much attached to the Church, while advancing the state of biblical studies.
