Jan Morris's prose is so beautiful that the locations that she writes about are almost a secondary feature of her books. My father's family emigrated from Wales in the 1840's and I visited the country when I returned a portion of his ashes to an ancestral farm there, so I'm biased. More than biased, honestly. I love the land and its history. Although her portrait of it is now almost twenty years old, I can't think of a finer book to give someone I wanted to introduce to Wales.
