When I first read this book, more decades ago than I prefer to quantify, I was struck by how reality-based was her depiction of classic theatre architecture and equipment. To me, that was more informed history than fiction. Some of the scholarly assertions had no contact with the reality of sight lines and such like. Staging a production is staging a production, regardless of the century. Any theatre student worth his salt can chart the progress from Thespis to Euripides in terms of the number of speaking parts and the derivation from skene to scene. So the trick is bringing the period believably to life. This she does quite admirably.
