Not Mary Renault's very best, but none of her books are even mediocre. There's a lot of history and action compiled here in a story that's wild enough to make your head spin, so that's why frequent reference to the list of characters is necessary. Everyone in Ancient Greece seems to be related and also bent upon killing one another, but other than that, the descriptions of everyday life and food and clothing transport you to another world.
