This is by a favorite author, Mollie Hunter. She's Scottish, and often writes about Scottish history and historical figures. This is about Robert the Bruce, the Scottish king of the early 14th century, as told (in 3rd person, a relief from fictional 1st-person accounts many authors use) by his young messenger, "the king's swift rider." I purchased two copies of this; one a paperback for me because I did not know the story and I needed it for my collection, and the other a very attractive hardback which I will give as a gift to a young relative named Robert Bruce_____.
While I will give the book to our Robert, it will be a long time before he is able to read it for himself. It's not an easy read, in that it deals with a very violent time in Scottish history, and Mollie Hunter paints a very bleak picture of how life would have been. The reader must be able to deal with this, and yet appreciate the conflict that Martin, the "swift rider" has, in trying to be as peaceful as possible and stlll give assistance to Robert the Bruce, whom he deeply respects.
The pace of the story also is a bit sluggish, which might be off-putting to someone expecting a thrill a minute. There are definitely times where things are happening very quickly, almost to the point of confusing the reader, but on the whole the story seems to have an almost contemplative tone.
Mollie Hunter is a writer whom I've admired for over 20 years. She writes about her own history and culture with deep respect and integrity, and every book I've read of hers reflects that.
