As a high school soph I was forced to struggle thru "The Odyssey". As a college soph I struggled a little less...almost to the point of liking the damn thing. Struggling half-way thru the 658 page "Hawk Quest" I suddenly realized what was eating at me...this was a twenty-first century rendering of that damned "Odyssey"; one that makes the protagonist, Vallon, make Odysseus look like a piker. The big difference is that Odysseus had an excuse for screwing up ; Vallon is a certifiable ding-a-ling. Oddly I would recommend this book to avid historical fiction readers...you'll get a kick out of it...as I did ...once you get the connection ...but this one won't make it to the "Classics" list!!
