Focus on the Joy, not the Diet. This book is an excellent antidote to the rat race that modern life has become. It?s also a giant exception for me, since my typical reaction to most self-help books is a big sarcastic ?Yeah right?! Martha?s recipe for joy is broken down into ten components. For me, the third step, ?Desire?, was like a huge breath of fresh air in the face, because it helped me realize that some of the things I?d been spoon fed growing up might not be totally right! Not horrible, or evil, but they would never help me lead a happier life, and in fact were obstructing my happiness. If you?ve ever felt like you needed permission to stop doing what you?re ?supposed to do? and start doing what you really want to do (or even admitting what you really want to do), this is it. I love that it teaches you how to acknowledge your gut instinct. You have to be brave, but it?s worth it. I keep this one in my nightstand to remind myself it?s there whenever I need a little boost.
