Jonathan Hill provides and excellent and easily understood review of the fascinating interplay between secular philosophy, biblical foundations set forth by the New Testament writers, and contemporary political influences. He demonstrates that the creeds which we hold as infallible doctrines of the Godhead the divinity of Christ were in fact developed over a period of centuries and were impacted by contemporary philosophies, particulary platonic thought, as well as the ideas of prior theologians and political pressures. Despite the "messy" development of the creeds, they have been held by the universal church as biblical truths throughout the centuries. Although the creeds put to rest the fourth and fifth century heresies concerning the nature of God, theologians continued to interpret the shape of the Christian church in terms of how she was to carry out the mandates of Christ and interact with the everchanging cultures to the present day. Jonathan Hill gives one an appreciation for labors of the Fathers of the Faith and a better understanding of the need to continue to understand Christianity in terms of contemporary culture.
