Set against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties, The Great Los Angeles Swindle tells the colorful story of C.C. Julian and his ill-fated Julian Petroleum company. Like the infamous Teapot Dome scandal, "Julian Pete" concerned the exploitation of oil wells at a time when the expansion of use of the automobile made oil increasingly important to the nation. In the early 1920s, oil wells were being excavated all over the Los Angeles area and brought untold millions to people involved in the prospecting and sales of oil land. Author Jules Tygiel introduces C.C. Julian, a flamboyant character who herded unsuspecting people into "sucker tents" and sold them millions of dollars of shares in oil wells that had not yet been drilled. In 1927, his company collapsed, leaving tens of thousands of people with worthless stock and opening up a labyrinth of bribery, corruption, sucide and murder. Tracing the scandal's trail of corruption from Los Angeles city government to the state's Attorney General's office, The Great Los Angeles Swindle captures the panorama of oil speculation, stock manipulation, crime and corruption that characterized the United States in the 1920s.

FROM THE PUBLISHER-Here is a saga of the roaring twenties, with its glorification of business, its get-rich-quick mentality, and its paucity of government regulation-which bred speculation, corruption, and corporate chaos throughout the country. The Great Los Angeles Swindle exposes the schemes of C. C. Julian and his Julian Petroleum Corporation, known familiarly to thousands of Los Angeles residents as Julian Pete, thanks to Julian's folksy weekly newspaper ads.
