First published in 1949, this book explores the complexities of a relationship between an American soldier and an Italian girl in Naples during the Allied occupation in the Second World War. The Neapolitans are focused on survival at a time when life is cheap and uncertain. The soldier is in need of some tenderness and female companionship when such feelings seem out of place. The atmosphere in Naples during wartime is evocatively drawn and all the characters are wonderfully real and unsentimental.
Using sparse, strong prose, Alfred Hayes shows a deep understanding of human nature and an essential humanity that make this book very special. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
