A brilliant, bruising depiction of the dark side of 1950s Hollywood, from the author of In Love. At a Hollywood party, a screenwriter rescues an aspiring actress from a drunken suicide attempt. He is married, disillusioned; she is young, seemingly wise to the world and its slights. They slide into a casual relationship together, but as they become ever more entangled, he realises that his actions may have more serious consequences than he could ever have suspected. Hayes' exquisite novella, written in his cool, inimitable style, holds a revealing light to the hollowness of the Hollywood dream and exposes the untruths we tell ourselves, even when we think we have left illusions behind. 'A masterpiece ... an insider's manual for all those who would aspire to fame, the ghostly glamour of the movies' Nicholas Lezard, Guardian 'Hayes is the poet of the things we think about while lying in bed, when sleep refuses to carry us off' David Thomson

The New York Review of Books has done readers a favour by republishing this book which was first published in 1958. It is rightly identified as a classic.
With a deep understanding of human nature Alfred Hayes explores in sparse prose a relationship that accidentally develops between two brittle people, a scriptwriter and a would-be actress, adrift in the brassy superficial world of Hollywood.
This is an unsentimental and memorable book.

A CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD NOVEL
Alfred Hayes was a writer whom London's The New Statesman called "a truly formidable and terrifying talent." His MY FACE FOR THE WORLD TO SEE is, in my opinion, a minor classic, a Hollywood novel that deserves to be on the same shelf as Nathanael West's DAY OF THE LOCUST, Norman Mailer's THE DEER PARK, and Scott Fitzgerald's THE LAST TYCOON. Hayes is one of what I call "Hemingway's children," that is, writers who were influenced by Hemingway but retained their own voice and their own style (James Salter, author of A SPORT AND A PASTIME, and Alexander Trocchi, author of CAIN'S BOOK, are other examples.) Moody and romantic ("deeply moving," said The New York Herald Tribune), the novel is, as the Newsweek review said, "A short, jolting shot of bitter wisdom." The New York Times called it "an exciting, engrossing work, written with the sure skill of an artist." It has been out of print since 1959 and I have submitted it to a publisher friend in New York hoping he will put it back in print. Hayes published seven novels, three books of poetry, and one collection of stories. He shared an Oscar nomination with Fellini and Rossellini for the screenplay of Rossellini's PAISAN and did uncredited work on De Sica's THE BICYCLE THIEF. His Hollywood screenplays include THE LEFT HAND OF GOD and ISLAND IN THE SUN. His poem about Joe Hill, the IWW labor activist, became the lyrics for the ballad made famous by Joan Baez and which she still performs in her concerts. By the way, the copy I received was in perfect condition, even the dust jacket perfect after over half a century.
