Duns.--A soft fine fireclay with a soapy feel. End.--The direction in which the slines or partings run. Face.--The direction in which the coal is wrought, being at right angles to the slines. Faults.--Dislocations or displacements of the strata, which break the continuity of seams. The term is also erroneously applied to washouts and to banks of sandstone, bind or clunch, replacing a bed of coal. Fireclay.--Clay that will sustain an intense heat without fusing. Floor.--The bottom or junction of a coal seam with the under-clay. Fossil Charcoal.--Horizontal layers and patches of highly carbonised mineral matter adhering to the bedding plane of the coal.
