Excerpt from The Geology of the Country Between Derby, Burton-on-Trent, Ashby-De-La-Zouch and Loughborough: Explanation of Sheet 141 The limestone inliers at Ticknall and elsewhere were formerly extensively worked, and burnt for lime, but now only the beds at Breedon and Breedon Cloud are being worked. A small quantity of lime has also been obtained from the Lias outliers north of Leake, but the beds are too thin to be of much value. The Keuper Marl is worked for brickmaking at Burton, Derby, Loughborough, Hathern Station, and other places. Lead has been worked in the limestone near Calke, and manganese occurs in small quantities in the Keuper of Burton. The chief water-bearing strata are the Millstone Grit, the Bunter Pebble Beds and the Lower Keuper Sandstone; but as none of these form very extensive outcrops in this district, their water-bearing capacity is not so great as is usually the case. The Millstone Grit probably forms the best source, and it has been utilised at Stanton for the supply of Melbourne, Castle Donin ton and Long Eaton' while another boring in this rock at Mi ton supplies the populous district about Swadlincote. Loughborough obtains its water from catchment reservoirs in the Charnwood Hills. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ...
