The author says it in the book. We recite the Creed in our churches every Sunday - what does it mean? Why do we say it? Does it really count?
This book does a good job of explaining the Creed and how the author feels about it. If you are just a regular person you may not be worked up about this topic. However, reading this book gives you an appreciation for something that to many of us is something we rattled off at church since we were kids.
Johnson gives a good account of where the Creed came from and a line by line description of what it is about.
Don't get me wrong - this is not a book that you inhale in an evening. It takes some reading and thinking. His ideas are straightforward but this topic takes a while to truly learn.
I once heard dogma described as everything that is in the Nicene Creed. At the end Johnson says it succinctly. The real beauty of the Creed is that it is simple [elementary]. It contains only the basic beliefs - it is not about how many spouses one can have, or if only men can be clergy. It is about the basics of what a Christian believes.
