Beginning in the 1850s, Bradley introduces us to the prominent Americans who made their fortunes in the China opium trade. As they - good Christians all - profitably addicted millions, American missionaries arrived, promising salvation for those who adopted Western ways. And that was just the beginning. From drug dealer Warren Delano to his grandson Franklin Delano Roosevelt, from the port of Hong Kong to the towers of Princeton University, from the era of Appomattox to the age of the A-Bomb, THE CHINA MIRAGE explores a difficult century that defines U.S - Chinese relations to this day.

Supposing that most of the book is accurate, the story is almost shocking. How could America be so misled ? But, the author is so blatantly biased against Mao Zedong - who surely must have done something right - I found him annoying.
Two incorrect facts come to mind. The 140,000 Chinese in the Chinese Labor Corps did not serve in England, the trade unions would not permit it, they did serve behind the lines in France. B-52 bombers were not in service in 1945. I suspect there are many more.
