Not illustrated. 1896 Excerpt: ...were sometimes used by the later scribe. The descendants of Jehoiachin are traced down. later than the date at which the Book of Kings closes. The history of the dispersion of Simeon is peculiar to Chronicles. The genealogies of families after the return to Jerusalem are given by the chronicler. Many of David's heroes are noticed (1 Chron. xL 41-xiv. 22) who K are not noticed in Samuel; but they belong to towns like Carmel, Gibeah, Azmaveth, Anathoth, Gederah, Haruph, &c, which were all in the south, in Benjamin and Judah, and no improbability is noticed. The source of his calculation of David's army (1 Chron. xii. 23-40) is not stated by the chronicler, nor is that of the list of Levites (xv. 1-24), or of the longer lists of Levites, gate-keepers, treasurers, generals, princes, and ministers, in Solomon's time (xxiii-xxvii.) From the chronicler only we learn that the Tabernacle was set up at Gibeon (2 Chron. i. 3-6, 13), and that Solomon made a second census (ii. 17), and an altar of bronze (iv. 1). He adds Hamath to Solomon's kingdom (2 Chron. viii. 3, 4), where the older account (1 Kings ix. 18) speaks only of Tadmor or Palmyra, to the south-east of Hamath. For Solomon's reign, however, he quotes authorities not noticed in the Book of Kings. In the reign of Behoboam the chronicler gives us a valuable list of the frontier fortresses on the low hills west and south of Jerusalem (2 Chron. xi. 5, 12). He quotes the prophet Iddo for the victory of Abijah, which carried his frontier northwards to Bethel and Jeshanah from the earlier border of the Michmash valley, thus recovering the whole co...
