This is a spectacularly good book. It is well written, thoroughly researched, conversant with the sources, and generally fair in its analysis. There is one critique - and this is a very minor one: Murray shows his Roman bias in discussing Syriac ecclesiology. Church of the East, Syriac Church, 'Nestorian' Church leaders would argue that they are equally apostolic , orthodox, and independent as is the Roman and Western Orthodox churches.
Having said this, this work is essential an essential tool in coming to understand a part of Christendom that 95% of people in the West have never heard of. Read it; enjoy it; learn.
