The Spotlight On series compiles traditional pop vocal performances from classic Capitol recording artists without paying any particular attention to chart hits or single releases. Concentrating on richly orchestrated interpretations of "great songbook" songs, the series revives mostly '50s and '60s album tracks, which is where many vocalists felt they created their best work. Spotlight on Dinah Shore examines the music from Shore's stint with Capitol Records from 1959-1961, during which time she released six albums. Shore had no hits during this period, but the oddball single "I Ain't Down Yet" came close. True to form, Spotlight on Dinah Shore omits that track in favor of 18 songs by esteemed composers such as Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George & Ira Gershwin and Harold Arlen. These are serious, mature performances featuring a subtle, nuanced Shore still in top form twenty years into her recording career. Capitol paired Shore with top accompanists and conductors such as André Previn, Nelson Riddle, Red Norvo and Dick Reynolds, so the arrangements are all first rate. The selections include roughly four songs each from the albums Dinah, Yes Indeed!, Dinah Sings, Previn Plays, Somebody Loves Me, and Dinah Sings Some Blues with Red, as well as a re-recording of "Blues in the Night" from The Fabulous Hits of Dinah Shore. The only album not represented is Dinah Down Home, a not-quite country album she recorded for Capitol toward the end of her tenure. EMI has released most of these albums in their entirety on CD in Europe, but Spotlight on Dinah Shore captures some of the highlights at a mid-line price. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi
