Excerpt from Shanghai Considered Socially: A Lecture The first mention we find of the name, Shang hai, is in the year 1015. The town is first spoken of as Shanghai chin, meaning, the market of Shanghai. The word Shanghai is generally ad mitted to mean up from the sea or the upper sea. But sometimes the characters are transpos ed, in which case the name Hat'shang means upon the sea. All these names indicate that what gave the city its importance was its favour able position as the seaport of the immense and productive region stretching inland. As the natural outlet for the rich products of Keangnan, and of the valley of the upper Yangtse, and as a convenient emporium for the interchange and transhipment of the products of the North and South, we cannot wonder that Shanghai rapidly grew in importance. In 1250 it was made the seat of a district college; in 1360 it attained to the dignity of a hien or district city; while in 1570 the irruptions of the pirates of Japan led to the erection of its walls, towards the building of which we are told that the inhabitants contributed very readily.
