In this book, Bruce W. Winter maps out the role and obligations of Christians as benefactors and citizens in their society. Winter's scholarly insight is enhanced through the selective use of important ancient literary and nonliterary sources. Contrary to the popular perception that early Christians withdrew from society and sought to maintain a low profile, this outstanding study explores the complexities of the positive commitments made by Christians in Gentile regions of the Roman empire.

This was an eye-opening book for me. It is a study of first century life and the light this knowledge shines on various New Testament passages. The added information on the culture in which the New Testament was written leads to insights on the passages which strike me as quite solid, even if somewhat uncommon in the traditional commentaries. It can be quite technical (both in history and in theology) at times, which is not for everybody.
I appreciate that the author applies the information he gathers to specific Scriptures which avoids the common experience of unfocused flood of information and also presents a pattern for further applying the information to other passages.
