I found Elizabeth Goudge abut forty-one years ago. My first read was Child From the Sea, and I was hooked. When I read The Scent of Water, I felt like I had come home to the softest of sweet places in the soul. Ms. Goudge could write a story that would touch a gentle heart like none other. I can honestly say that the impression she made on me in my early twenties definitely led my life in a sweet, stable direction. Her spiritual approach will touch anyone who believes in God, and you will find yourself coming home, too. I have, and still would, recommend this author to anyone. As a matter of fact, I am here today to purchase copies of Elizabeth Goudge's books for my library again. I need her now in 2012 like I needed her back in 1970.

An ephemoral woman to child relationship
The Scent of Water by Elizabeth Goudge is an exquisite example of teaching without telling, and learning through awakening awareness; the story of a younger woman who, having once met her namesake, receives a legacy when her elderly cousin passes. This book should be kept in every library.

Lovely book
This is a sweet, nice, kind, warm book. It is not vaguely edgy, it's full of the milk of human kindness, and I love it dearly. That's not to say there aren't moments of great pain and drama, but everything ends up being all right, if not perhaps exactly the way one envisions. Elizabeth Goudge was brilliant at this sort of book, and although this isn't my absolute favourite of her books, it's lovely all the same, and is perhaps my 3rd or 4th-best-loved of her books (and she wrote a lot). Highly recommended to people who like this sort of capital-R Romantic book.

A Superb Novel
This is a quietly compelling book, one which I have already recommended and loaned to a number of my more discerning friends. Ostensibly a tale of a middle-aged woman who inherits, and then moves to, a cottage in a small village, it is a thoughtfully and beautifully written tale of human pain and triumph.
If your tastes run to more dashing plots and characters, you may be disappointed, but if you are looking for a gentle, deeply moving book, I believe you will find this a satisfying read and well worth your time. A deeply spiritual work without ever being preachy, The Scent of Water still hovers in my mind weeks after I finished reading the last page.
