This book is the result of 11 years of work by many people: exiled South African war-resisters and supporters of COSAWR who researched, wrote, edited, illustrated, laid out and distributed "Resister". The 67 issues of "Resister" contained about three-quarters of a million words - this book has less than 100,000. What appears here, then, is but a small proportion of the magazine. It is not the "Best of Resister": the material has been selected so as to give an overview of the concerns of the magazine, and to tell the story of COSAWR and the wider war-resistance movement in South Africa. The articles are largely as they originally appeared, although most have been cut and many are extracts from much longer pieces. Minor changes have been made in places to improve readability, but the editors have endeavoured not to change the style or meaning of the original articles, nor have they attempted to update the material. The selection is a result of the personal taste and judgement of the editors, who between them were involved in writing, editing and producing the magazine over the entire period of its publication.
