Banned from all gatherings, he left South Africa with Oliver Tambo in 1960 for political exile in Britain, where four years later he convened the International Conference on Economic Sanctions against South Africa. In 1994 he returned at the invitation of the African National Congress to help with its campaign in South Africa's first democratic election. Founding editor of the Penguin African Library, he is the author of a number of important books, including Political Africa , The Crisis of India , The Race War and, most recently, The Black Diaspora .
