Gunsmoke Showdown
I used the original title for my title so you can look for this book in hardback if you wish. But under whatever the title, this Matt Stuart/ L P Holmes book is another of his unique and powerful novels of the west. I am holding the 1951 Bantam book in my hand as write this review. I have owned it since 1982. Saddle-Man is the story of Bruce Martell who rides into Indio Basin seeking his kid brother, but finds himself embroiled in a range war. Hack Ashell is suspicious of any rider coming into the Basin and has vowed to kill anyone who rustles even one head of his cattle. Cashel Edmunds ran the land office and he had "his ways" of keeping the land office business booming by selling land to the arriving homesteaders--land not strictly his to sell. Tracy Carling carried a bull whip to use on any "saddle man" but she sensed something different in Martell. Here are the basic ingredients that Matt Stuart uses to tell this fine 'tradtional' western story you should miss. Get your copy today.
