Part fact, part fiction, this book by Peter Dawson is well worth reading. Bourke Rold comes to Canon City searching for his brother's killer and becomes enmeshed in the deadly railroad war between the Rio Grande and the Santa Fe over the rightaway through Royal Gorge. To complicate matters, Rourke is being pursued by the army as a deserter. When he learns that a man named Tom Kimbrell might hold the answers to his questions about his brother's death, the man Kimbrell sends his hired thugs to get rid of Rourke. The question becomes, Why? What "secret" did Kimbrell know concerning Rold's brother that would prompt such an action? This story is a fine example of the kind of writing Peter Dawson was known for, and one of his best tales of the old west.
