I love history, but what is always more interesting than dates and wars to me is the social history - what ordinary people wore, thought, did, believed - and ate. And being both somebody who grew up watching things like Ben-Hur and somebody who loves to cook, Mark Grant's little book of modernized ancient Roman recipes was a fascinating thing. Gathered from many contemporary sources, but not from Apicius, this is an interesting collection of things that the average Roman would have eaten. No sow's udders or sea urchins here. It was actually quite a simple, healthy diet based on bread, vegetables, legumes, a little meat, and wine. Erudite, and often quite funny, there are chapters on each meal of the day, with plenty of historical background, and each recipe is headed by its ancient counterpart (translated, of course). There are some unusual recipes for vegetables, meats in interesting sauces, breads, cakes and sweetmeats, and a very delicious herb-and-cheese pate for spreading on bread. Extremely gratifying. If you are interested in the more spectacular aspects of Roman cookery, by all means read Apicius. It's fascinating - and disgusting, too. But if you want something both ancient and accessible, and tasty too, for that matter, then try this!
