Worth reading, but definitely not his best work. Maybe the result of a Tourism Montana request?

Classic travel
In this book, Mr. Doig joins an illustrious company of writers that use long trips to facilitate the development of characters, the teaching of life's lessons, adventure and self discovery. Homer and J. D. Salinger come to mind. In this work the "hero" Jick McCaskill travels Montana in his Winnebago, with his daughter, a newpaper photographer and her divorced husband, a newspaper columnist. Their assignment is to write a collection of articles focused on Montana's Centennial celebration. Jick is not thrilled by the close proximity to his ex-son in law, but his daughter Mariah prevails on him to cooperate. The lessons, memories, insights and adventures unfold during that journey around Montana. During the several month odyssey, Jick comes to terms with the death of his wife of 4o+ years, his relationship to family and the land that has been in his family for generations, and how he wants to spend the last third of his life. Doig's style creates an instant bond between reader and character. His characters are all human to a fault and like "us humans" struggle with issues that may seem commonplace but really define us all. An Excellent Story, well told.
