Cultural expression
I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks of Haiti as a backward country. I would also recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what "Voodoo" really is. The Haitians are a fascinating, varied group of people and their art, besides being beautiful, is extrememly expressive of their culture. This book explains that connection very clearly. Even if you are not interested in art as such this book provides an excellent history of a country most Americans have heard about only as a place belonging to horror stories.
After reading Selden Rodman's book I have a new respect for the country and the people who comprise it.
