Seller's Description:
Very Good jacket. Greenwich. 1977. Devin-Adair. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0815956169. 150 pages. hardcover. Jacket illustration: 'Angel in Tennis Shoes' by Djanira da Mota e Silva. Collection: Artist. Photo: William Negron. keywords: Latin America Brazil Art. DESCRIPTION-In the backlands of Brazil, from São Paulo in the south to Recife in the northeast, self-taught artists of stunning originality are beginning to be heard from. In Pernambuco the Indian, Nhb Caboclo, has invented mobiles and stabiles without ever having heard of Calder. In Bahia, most ‘African' of Brazilian states, the artist who calls himself Louco (Crazy) has melded the symbolisms of candomblê and Christianity into magisterial wood carvings. In a small town of Minas Gerais a third sculptor of genius, instructed by no more than his dreams, makes multi-figured reliefs as compelling as those of the early Italian Renaissance. In São Jose do Rio Prêto, ninety miles inland from South America's biggest city, the great painter Jose Antonio da Silva, once acclaimed patronizingly by the art establishment and then rejected, crucifies his critics in a hell of his own devising. These are but four of the twenty-one master artists discussed in this first book in any language on the popular artists of Brazil-their biographies, their life-styles, their ways of talking, seeing and working; their works in 63 magnificent illustrations, 17 in full color. But GENIUS IN THE BACKLANDS is more than that. It provides sustenance to millions of art lovers throughout the world who have begun to give up hope that art will ever again reclaim the realms of natural beauty, religious ecstasy and human experience. The counter-offensive launched against these artists by the Brazilian art establishment indicates clearly enough its awareness of the threat to an investment of billions sustained by nothing but the monopoly artificially by its own hired critics-a situation duplicated in all the troubled societies of the West. Selden Rodman's credentials for presenting the new Brazilian art and making a strong case for its world-wide significance are well established. As Co-Director of the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince in the 1940s he took part in the renaissance of Haitian popular art and initiated the world-famous mural painting of the Cathedral Ste. TrinitE. He had already written the first book about a black artist, Horace Pippin: A Negro Artist in America, and was soon to write a series of books proposing an alternative high art: The Eye of Man, Conversations with Artists (Pollock, De Kooning, Tobey, David Smith, et al. vs. Shahn, Wyeth, Graves, Frank Lloyd Wright, et al. ) and The Insiders. Other recent books by Selden Rodman include THE BRAZIL TRAVELER, TONGUES OF FALLEN ANGELS, ONE HUNDRED BRITISH POETS and THE MIRACLE OF HAITIAN ART. He lives with his wife and children in Oakland, New Jersey, and Jacmel, Haiti. inventory #3828.
