In the north, the western range is called the Cordillera Negra, owing to the absence of snow upon its upper crests while the eastern range, the Andes proper. Is known as the Cordillera Nevada. The highest eleva tion to which the coastal Cordillera attains is about ft. While the eastern or main range, which main tains a height of about ft. Between the montafia zone and the Huallaga river valley, forms the watershed between the Atlantic and Pacific regions of South America.
