Betty MacDonald's final memoir, Onions in the Stew recounts her second attempt at farm-living, this time on Washington's then-remote Vashon Island along with her second husband, Don MacDonald, and her two teenage daughters.

It's as if she has gained a name as an author and thinks we want to know more about her family and how they live. I didn't.

Another slice in Betty MacDonald's life
I originally read Onions in the Stew when I was in college. MacDonald's ability to draw the reader into her world is delightful. The humor is often at the expense of turmoil and strife but it's that kind of tenacity that builds character. And Betty MacDonald has plenty to keep us all laughing and worrying and wondering as we navigate the choppy waters of her life on Vashon Island.
Buy it and read it - you'll get a kick out of it for sure.
