While individual animals seem to live Koto wdBos, for themselves, and to satisfy merely their own immediate wants, there is all the while at work within them 'an eternal principle not themselves' (6u6v ), by which their behaviour is regulated in conformity with a plan which includes all Nature: romin-ijs dpxnt jjprrfrai 6 uvpayis nai j/ tpvait (Mel.
