The whole revised and prepared for American housekeepers, by Mrs. S. J. Hale. From the second London edition. Original publisher's black embossed cloth; gilt title and illustration on spine. Wear to corners; spine ends chipped ca. 1/4 inch at each end; text clean with virtually no foxing. Good+ condition in original binding. First published in 1845, this influential cookbook went through many editions. It was a favorite of Elizabeth David who once ranked it as the greatest cookbook in the English language. John and Karen Hess echo this opinion, calling it "one of the finest cookbooks in the English language" (The Taste of America. New York, 1977). Lowenstein 630.
