A considerable proportion of the records of dramatic performances collected by Mr. Chambers2 are taken, it will be observed, from churchwardens' account books. In many parishes the churchwardens kept on hand a stock of properties to be used in these performances. And wherever such plays were given it was the churchwardens who looked after the incidental expenses and took charge of the receipts.
