"Well, old Cock," said the Chief Lion, "what brings you here, eh? The old Cock, by way of explaining what had brought him there, entered forthwith into a long tale of the troubles which he and his aquiline co-mates were enduring from those abominable pests, the jackdaws. "We have had our trials too, as I daresay you have heard," said the Lion. And then he amused the Eagle with wonderful accounts of the audacious pranks played by the jackasses. "You would hardly credit," said Leo, " what those confounded brutes are capable of. They disturb our repose with their detestable voices; and if they see one of our royal race blinking and dozing by himself, perhaps after an imprudently heavy dinner, they will approach his noble presence and give him a jolly spanking kick between the eyes." "And do you never punish them?" asked the Eagle, sternly. "Is it possible that you are so schooled to bear insult and vulgar violence, that you let these atrocious villains depart without a terrible chastisement, so that they may attack you again, with a courage fortified by impunity?
