I really like this book with its soft approach toward trying to get others to experiment with vegetarianism. Linda's emphasis in this book is not toward something as radical as veganism, but she encourages families to try regular, home cooking style dishes with protein substitutes. The book is nicely photographed and very pretty. Linda's writing style is engaging. I was pleasantly surprised.

Good for the beginning vegetarian
As a novice vegetarian, I appreciated the tone and content of this book, which really emphasized the reasons for embracing vegetarianism and the enjoyment of vegetarian meals. The recipes are easy to make, and dishes like the shepherd's pie and eggplant (aubergine) parmesan are very tasty.
My only criticism is that she relies heavily on commercially made veggie "meat" substitutes, which I do not want to emphasize in my diet, but they're fine on occasion. (The Moosewood line of cookbooks and Carol Gelles' 1000 Vegetarian Recipes, which do not rely as heavily on meat substitutes, are a good complement to Linda McCartney's line of books.) Otherwise, this is a great book with a lot of choice for the vegetarian cook.

Easy Recipes with Great Results
I purchased this cookbook after owning Ms. McCartney's second cookbook--Linda's Kitchen--which is one of my favorites. This cookbook, Home Cooking, is also a nice collection of recipes, which seem well tested. Ms. McCartney's recipes always turn out well for me. When I do have to substitute ingredients, because they are not always readily available, it has not been a problem. I think the recipe for a Baskin-Robbins style ice-cream cake in this cookbook is worth the price of the book!
