A woman, a man, a murder, a love story. Likely or not? A cop who believes the worst, but glimpses the best in the heroine makes him putty in her hands. That she is unaware is a by product of Howard's writing prowess. One does not feel it is unlikely immediately, even with the "tiffs" set up initially. It is preordained that she will run to him and he is ready when she needs his help. This is a straight forward story that starts and leads straight through to the end. It is a natural unfolding of their story amidst the side plots. One never loses sight that this will end the way it does, just that the backstory provides a great line of twists to entice while they come to their natural progressive end. This is a great read - overt in its lines to the finale, but entertaining to get to throughout.
