A lot of the bands in the indie/alternative scene owed a debt to Suicide, either directly or indirectly, and this compilation brings together a number of artists who wanted to acknowledge the fact by covering some songs by Martin Rev and Alan Vega. It's a very noisy and drony affair in a lot of places, and that's only natural considering the source material being honored here, but there are also a few loops thrown: both the Gories and Mudhoney give their numbers a garagey feel, the Flaming Lips turn in a very Lips-like version of Suicide, Angel Corpus Christi throws in accordion, and both the Nomads and Ben Vaughn check in with a version of rockabilly that's more traditional than suicidal. The performer who's the most true to the original is Sonic Boom, who swaps his guitar for handclaps and keyboards here. Tracking down a copy of this isn't worth killing yourself over, but it's certainly got enough good material to make it worth at least a concerted effort. ~ Sean Carruthers, Rovi
