Integrated circuit (IC) technology lies at the heart of a vast array of electronic equipment. Every personal computer for example is built around a motherboard containing a maze of ICs of varying types and sizes. As a consequence, many engineers and scientists must have a grasp of integrated circuit capabilities and the design of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), with an appreciation of processing, device, behavior, and practice. Designed as a textbook, this book gives broad, comprehensive coverage of ICs that can be used in undergraduate or continuing education training. The first of three parts deals with processing, component formation, and device modelling. The chapters that follow focus on digital and analogue circuits, including semiconductor memories, with performance summaries of commercial products. The final part fully explains the nature of ASIC's and covers VSLI scaling and the dominant role of interconnection in the scaling process. Though this information benefits all researchers, the book was written primarily for students in electronic engineering and applied physics. It responds to a serious gap in the literature, since the many books on ICs which have appeared during the last 20 years are generally pitched at a graduate rather than undergraduate level and tend to be specialized in their coverage.
