ââ?¬Å"In$ured to the Hilt: A John Smith Mysteryââ?¬Â? by Charlotte Stuart is a detective mystery novel with a sense of humor. Enter: a money-hungry woman who is like so many others looking to cash in on insurance. She has a vivacious daughter, a driven assistant, and an insurance agent fixated on keeping his reputation from being tarnished. What happens, though, is that these characters are ââ?¬Å"insured to the hilt,ââ?¬Â? as the title suggests, and in more ways than one.
Itââ?¬â?¢s up to John Smith, a former private detective turned insurance investigator, to get to the bottom of a car accident claim in which the ââ?¬Ë?victimââ?¬â?¢ alleges permanent injuries. One thing leads to another, and Smith finds himself in the crosshairs, as he is sort of a lone wolf who wants to handle things without help from the police.
Stuart brings fresh energy to the detective drama. The authors sense of quirky humor shines in just the right places, and thats a pleasant change of pace if youre looking for something unique in your sleuth stories. Youll find thoughtfully drawn characters, dependable plotting, and a wry slant to it all.
But dont worry. The hardboiled detective angle is still here, and fans of this genre wont be disappointed. There is a realism to the lightheartedness that readers will find appealing, which makes for a well-rounded read. Some may even call it a cozy mystery. Using the world of insurance as the backdrop for the plot was a good choice, as most readers are familiar with insurance, and the author does a good job of using it as the foundation for the novel.
The supporting characters, like the police officer Bruno, are also well-developed and colorful, and the dialogue is smart and funny. The first-person point of view gives the story another layer that adds to the realism and personal feel of the narrative.
You will definitely have a good time reading this one and may find yourself asking for more books from this author. Fans of Agatha Christie mystery books will fall in love with the new style found in ââ?¬Å"In$ured to the Hilt: A John Smith Mysteryââ?¬Â? by Charlotte Stuart.
