ââ?¬Å"Ravenââ?¬â?¢s Graveââ?¬Â? by award-winning Charlotte Stuart is a powerful drama set against the stunning backdrop of the Alaskan wilderness. It focuses on the mysterious death of a young boy who dies in a late-night ceremony meant to heal a permanent limp. The only person apparently to blame is a teenage shaman named Chaaky, so the search is on. Also at play is a missing $75,000. This is a big deal in a small community seemingly suspended in time. The only police officer in town is non-native Jonah St. Clair, originally from California, who must track the shaman and solve the murder using his skills and what he knows about the culture.
This sets the stage for a completely engrossing, character-driven investigation drama with a supernatural flavor. The character of St. Clair is both predator and prey in this grippingly suspenseful story as he is caught up in the pursuit and his survival skills are put to the test.
Stuart writes with captivating skill that brings her characters and the Alaskan environment to life. St. Clair is an everyday guy with an everyman heroic mentality and heart. The teenage shaman is a very intriguing character as well, and you will get a closer look at the local culture and its practices. You will be so caught up in the story that you feel like youve become part of that location, even if only vicariously. Intricate descriptions, details, and good dialogue are woven together in this unique, evenly-paced plot all work toward the success of this unpredictable novel.
The Native culture is like a character itself, and so interesting to read about. The emotional layers in the book are satisfying, especially when it comes to Jonahs history with the Vietnam War, making everything believable and possible. The author writes with intelligence and insight, leading you to trust that she is taking you and the story in satisfying directions. I wouldnt put it on the level of a thriller. It isnt that kind of book. Its a solid investigation drama grounded in interesting characters and an intriguing time and setting.
If you like deep crime dramas with well-developed and compelling characters, you will love ââ?¬Å"Ravenââ?¬â?¢s Graveââ?¬Â? by award-winning Charlotte Stuart.
