Excerpt from In the Beginning: A Sketch of Some Early Events in Western Washington While It Was Still a Part of Old Oregon During the past two years it has been my good fortune to delve at will among the old records and correspondence of the early days at old Fort Nisqually, the earliest white man's home in what is now Western Washington. This has given me a clearer insight into the manners and customs of its people than any course of mere book reading. To the citizens of the United States, to-day, it seems hardly possible that the English people could have honestly believed they had a just claim to any part of our present territory. In fact most of our people think we were cheated out of a large slice of territory when, by the treaty of 1846, our northern boundary was brought down from 54 deg., 40 min., to 49 deg. On the other hand, no doubt of the ultimate settlement of this long-standing dispute between the two English speak ing nations, by adopting the Columbia river as the natural boundary, appears in the old documents mentioned above, or in the published works of the Englishmen who wrote of this north-west prior to 1845.
