Like all the other boys at school, he attended Hitler Youth meetings, where he sang, marched, and played sports. But his youth came to an abrupt halt with the advent of World War II. He served as a German soldier, eventually becoming a prisoner of war of both American and French troops for more than three years. Upon his release, Koehler began what he calls his "second life." He attended college and graduate school in Germany, and was an exchange student at Georgia Tech for a year. After earning a PhD, he moved to the United States, where he started a family and worked as an electrical engineer for over thirty years.
