Dankwart Koehler grew up in Germany during the Hitler era and WWII. 18 years old, he became a prisoner of war in France for 3 1/2 years. After his studies of electrical engineering, including one year as an exchange student in Atlanta, he emigrated to the United States where he spent most of his career at the renowned Bell Laboratories.
