The Dracula most of us know from modern presentations is a quite different animal from the character that Bram Stoker created. Skal is a long-acknowledged expert in the realm of horror media. With sure & literate hand, he traces the behind-the-scenes progress of Stoker's character into the complex world of 20th century stage, screen, commerce, & litigation. It is gratifying that with this 1990 book, he was among the first writers to advocate passionately for the then little-seen, remarkable 1931 Spanish DRACULA that Universal produced concurrently with the Bela Lugosi English-language version.

"Dracula never dies. . ."
Hollywood Gothic is a must for anyone interested in the dramatic/cinematic history of the western world's most famous vampire. Beginning with an introduction to the vampire in literature the author goes on to discuss Bram Stoker's brainchild literally from from page to stage and from screen to Hallowe'en. From the copyright and financial struggles of Stoker's widow to the copyright and financial sturggles of Lugosi's family many years later, David Skal proves the truth of Lugosi's words to his son "Dracula is both a blessing and a curse and Dracula never dies." The author's book is well illustrated with photos from the earliest English production to the latest fim version and contains biographical information on many of the dramatic and film stars who created and helped the King of Vampires to survive all these centuries. Beg, borrow or steal but read Hollywood Gothic !
